MODERN POSTMARKS (Berry Island)

"I was interested in Mr. Britnor's remarks on the modern postmarks of Bahamas in Bulletin No. 11, p. 49, but would like to take issue on one point. He refers to Berry Island in the singular whereas in fact it should be Berry Islands. They constitute a small group in the shape of an arc and the Bahamas Post Office states that a Post Office exists at Lignum Vitae Cay. I have a cover from this office dated 26th May 1947, so up to that time, at least, there must have been somebody able to act as Postmaster. 1 understand that the Post Office is situated in the north of the group and as the southernmost island is about 50 miles from Nassau it is possible that what mail there is from the group may be conveyed direct to Nassau. The total population is under 400, and even if the mail is sent direct as surmised I cannot understand how the letters to which Mr. Britnor refers missed being cancelled before they were dispatched. Perhaps some other member has a recent cover from Berry Islands and can state what postmark it bears."
